Reading Reflection No. 2

For this assignment, I read Makers: The New Industrial Revolution.

1. What was the general theme or argument of the book?

The argument was that, although the Internet and technology is great and promotes innovation, as a culture we need to be making moves towards design with physical atoms over creating of more digital bits.

2. How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?

The book fit with ENT because it rested heavily on the idea of there being a difference between an investor and an entrepreneur, which is something that has been discussed in class. Furthermore, it talked about how in nowadays, the barriers to entry have become lower due to the Internet and how people have the ability to create more on their own without the need for a large scale production company.

3. If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?

I would design an exercise around the idea of using technology to create something with physical atoms. Maybe this would be something along the lines of creating a prototype (or maybe an ad if a prototype isn't feasible) of the entrepreneurial ideas we have created using some sort of computer program, such as gimp or a 3d design program.

4. What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?

The books main argument of needing to make a move towards more physical innovation really intrigued me. So often, we see so much innovation in technology and computers, but its been a long time since America has done something truly groundbreaking or futuristic. After the internet came along, everyone turned towards developing the next great app, but there is so much more than just creating websites or apps, creating products with physical atoms can help to innovate the world.

Comments

  1. I really like the idea of creating a computer model of what we plan to create or a advertisement for it. As of right now its for the most part just an idea, that has started to form and has not had the chance as of yet to come to life so to speak. I agree with what your book was saying when it was saying that we almost abandoned the idea of the next great product, we are all trying to create the next great facebook.

  2. Morgan, what a cool book. People do not realize how the world today is going through another revolution, the technology revolution. I believe that our children will grow up learning about this time in history much as we did about the industrial revolution.

  3. Morgan,

I like your point about creating physical atoms. Ever since the internet, we have developed electronic apps instead of physical prototypes. I agree that the world has been innovative, but not innovative enough that everything is digital. Perhaps, we are entering another era and leaving behind other faults in our society. I think this a great book and I will definitely check it out!
